A Lasting Legacy
1885
Cooke Stone and Ice Company providing railroad ballast. The delivery from the quarry was made in railroad cars and by horse-drawn dump carts.
1902
Cooke Stone and Ice Company was one of six quarrying companies that came together to form the new Connecticut Trap Rock Quarry Company.
1912
Demand for crushed rock increases with the first “paved” roads being built to accommodate increasing use of the newly invented automobile.
1923
Angelo Tomasso Inc. was founded. The company landed its first big job- excavating foundations for New Britain’s Fafnir Bearing Co.
1924
Connecticut Trap Rock Company becomes the Connecticut Quarries Company Inc.
1931
Built first section of New York’s Taconic Parkway.
1935
Connecticut Quarries Company Inc. merges with the New Haven Trap Rock Company (formed in 1914) and changes its name.
1939
Built its first asphalt plant at Tower Brick Co.
1940
Acquired the Plainville quarry and moved the business to its current location.
1941
Angelo Tomasso Inc. constructs Brainard Airport in Hartford.
1950
Set a record transporting 797 tons of blacktop 26 miles to Bradley Field, laying it all in a single day.
1957
North Haven Asphalt Company and Tomasso of North Haven, Inc. founded, and supply materials for the new Connecticut Turnpike.
1961
Sherman Sand and Stone Co. (New Britain), Sherman-Tomasso Concrete Inc. founded.
1964
Arborio & Sons (Farmington) and the formation of a new entity known as Arborio Tomasso, Inc.
1965
Modern crushing facility built at Plainville quarry.
1968
Received wide acclaim by laying a mile of concrete a day on 3 ¼ mile section of I-84 in Plainville, New Britain, and Farmington.
1972
Ashland Oil Resources Company purchased Angelo Tomasso Inc. to become NHTR Tomasso. They set a world record for placing 18,300 tons of asphalt in 18 hours at Bradley International Airport.
1979
NHTR Tomasso became known as Tilcon Tomasso.
1984
Sold to British Tire and Rubber Co.
1990
Tilcon Tomasso became known as Tilcon Connecticut.
1996
Acquired by CRH.
2007
New Plainville asphalt plant opens.
2009
Resurfaced the main runway at Bradley International Airport.
2013
Received a Quality in Construction Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) for the pavement preservation of I-84 in East Hartford and Manchester.

Poured 3.4 million sq. sf. of concrete at Amazon Distribution job in Windsor Locks.

We are planning out the next 100 years for our operations in Plainville. We our proud to provide this valuable resource for our community and are excited for our future together.
Over a two year period, we removed abandoned rail infrastructure, built berms to buffer the view of our operations and to safely manage traffic flow. In the fall of 2025, some plantings will be replaced, but overall, the vegetation is thriving on the new berm. Currently, a new Tilcon CT sign is being designed for this entrance.
In 1995, the Connecticut General Assembly passed “An Act Concerning Protection of Ridgelines” (P.A.95-239). This act specifically addresses basalt (also known as trap rock) ridges and allows for certain restrictions within Ridgeline setback areas. The act aims to preserve views and protect the aesthetic character of the area, as Ridgelines have a high profile and wide visibility that can characterize a whole region. Quarrying activity is restricted by law to protect Connecticut’s Ridgeline. Our operations are prohibited from encroaching.
This beautiful hiking trail is on the western boundary of the Tilcon CT property, providing opportunities for hiking and outdoor recreation. Signage and berms identify the Tilcon CT operational boundary to ensure safety for everyone enjoying the Metacomet Trail.
Protecting wetlands has been in Tilcon’s history since 1972 when the company donated acres of tidal wetlands to the state of Connecticut. SLR is a global sustainability consulting firm specializing in wetland protection and restoration. They have mapped the wetlands on the north site extensively, documenting species of plants and animals. SLR’s wetland professionals continue to carefully monitor wetlands on all the Tilcon CT properties in Plainville.
The Aquifer Protection Area Program responsibilities are shared by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the municipalities, and the water companies. DEEP is responsible for overall program administration, establishing state land-use regulations and standards, approving aquifer protection area maps and local regulations, and developing guidance materials.
